The case of leaks from water that you aren't aware of (or notice) could be a threat to your health. A small leak could be a huge issue and cause significant destruction to your home, which could result in a large amount of dollars. So, identifying the source of the leak as early as possible is one of the best methods to avoid the possibility of a catastrophe.

If you're worried that there's an undiscovered pipe leak, here are some ways to test.

Check for evidence of water damage. Spend some time through your home and check for signs of leaks. A few places to look include under a vanity underneath the sink, next to an electric hot water heater, near the sump pump, near an outdoor hose bib as well in the basement, where pipes could be evident. Watch out for the presence of unusual smells, mold, or the sound of water rushing in areas it shouldn't.

Check your water bill. A majority of households use equal amounts of water every month or during pay periods. If you go at a few of your bills for water and see an unintentional or sudden rise (and your routine hasn't changed), this could be an indication that there's an issue with your property.

Check your toilets. When you notice that the toilet has been in a random manner to refill even when it is not being used, this usually means that the flapper on the tank has worn down and the water is slowly flowing into the bowl. One way to confirm this is to add the smallest amount of food coloring in the tank. For fifteen minutes, don't run water into the bathroom during that period. If the water inside the bowl has now colored, then the internal part must be fixed or replaced.

Examine your water meters. The water meter in your home can provide you with an indication of whether the water flows through your pipes and you aren't even noticing. Start by shutting off any appliances or faucets that require water. After that, look at the water meter, and note the reading. Make sure that all water is turned off, and wait for 2 hours before rechecking the water meter again. If your readings are substantially different, it means that there is an issue with the flow of water.

Don't forget outside usage. Based on the time of year, it is possible that you are making use of (or losing) lots of water from outside your house. Verify that the outside faucets and irrigation systems are operating correctly.
